UW-Eau Claire to Present Choral Union Concert
on Mother's Day

RELEASED: April 27, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Concert Choir and Symphonic Choir will present a Choral Union Concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 8 — Mother's Day — in Zorn Arena. The choir will be 150 strong and will perform with the full University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Nobuyoshi Yasuda.

The concert will open with Johannes Brahms' "Rhapsody for Alto and Male Chorus," directed by Dr. Alan Rieck, and featuring mezzo soprano Kathryn Proctor Duax, professor of music. Set to a text by Goethe, one music reviewer has referred to this piece as a call for divine intervention to heal human pain.

The choirs and orchestra next will perform Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem" in honor and remembrance of all mothers. The performance also is dedicated to all those who have served or are serving in the armed forces of the United States, as well as those who have fallen in service to our country. The Requiem will feature soprano Mitra Sadeghpour, assistant professor of music, and baritone Dr. Robert Knight, professor of music. Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff will conduct.

First performed almost 150 years ago, Brahms' Requiem is recognized as a choral/orchestral masterpiece with almost universal appeal. Unlike many other requiems, Brahms does not offer prayers for the souls of the departed, but instead addresses the living, offering consolation. The structure of the whole, which includes seven movements, has been said to resemble a great arch, moving from dark to light, grief to consolation. This requiem firmly established Brahms as a composer of international stature.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
