Campus Groups Sponsoring Drive to Collect Books for African Students

RELEASED: April 26, 2005

Books for AfricaEAU CLAIRE — Members of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Circle K Club and Jumpstart Eau Claire are collaborating to sponsor a book drive on campus. Items donated will go to the Books for Africa organization, whose mission it is to "collect, sort, ship and distribute books to children in Africa."

According to its Web site, since its founding in 1988, Books for Africa has shipped more than 10 million books to primary through post-secondary schools in 22 African nations. However, the organization claims that the book famine in Africa is still widespread and it is not out of the ordinary to see five or six school children sharing one book.

Book donations can be made in two ways. The group will be collecting books outside the campus bookstore from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during finals week, May 16-20. However, group members are also willing to pick-up donations during the weeks of May 2 and May 9. If you would prefer a pick-up, contact Morgan Hansen at hansenmk@uwec.edu with your preferred day, time and location for a pick-up.

Hansen said the group is particularly interested in collecting as many textbooks as possible, but book donations of any sort are greatly appreciated.
