EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Katherine Schneider, senior psychologist emerita, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Counseling Services, has been selected to receive a philanthropy award from the Wisconsin Council of the Blind.

"I'm really pleased to be receiving one of the Wisconsin Council of the Blind's philanthropy awards," Schneider said. "This organization promotes the dignity and independence of blind and visually impaired people. In my guest lecturing, public speaking and in my establishing of awards for children's books about the disability experience and scholarship for a psychology student at UW-Eau Claire who has a disability, I have similar goals."

The Wisconsin Council of the Blind annually presents five awards to outstanding Northern Wisconsin organizations and citizens for their philanthropic contributions and public service. A special recognition luncheon is scheduled for Friday, April 29, during the WCB Philanthropy Day and Seminar to be held at the Ramada Inn Convention Center in Eau Claire.

Founded in 1952, the Wisconsin Council of the Blind is a private, non-profit agency. Its mission is "to promote the dignity and independence of people in Wisconsin who are blind and visually impaired by providing services, advocating legislation and educating the general public." WCB is completely funded by an annual drive, private grants and bequests.

"I believe that if we can get beyond the initial awkwardness about our differences, we can move beyond the tolerance of diversity to being enriched by differences and enjoying our interdependence in the human family," Schneider added.
