First Fridays to Wrap for Season with Digital Photo Presentation

RELEASED: April 21, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — First Fridays will conclude this season's series of programs for senior citizens with a May 6 presentation titled "Home Again!" Beth Kranz will demonstrate how to create digital photo albums at the event, which wraps up this year's theme, "Bringing the World Downtown: A Passport Season."

Beth Kranz currently works at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the Computing Assistance and Training program, a unit of Computing and Networking Services, the on-campus resource for building technology skills or for solving hardware and software problems. These services include a help desk, one-on-one assistance, customized workshops relating to curriculum or staff development needs, and regularly scheduled workshops for faculty, staff and students covering a range of basic and advance computing topics.

Kranz began her career teaching students in a parochial school. She later worked as a computer trainer in the rural schools of Nebraska, in the northern school districts of Phoenix, Arizona, and then the Fond du Lac school district. Eau Claire has been her home for about four years; she has worked for the university for two years.

Her presentation at First Fridays will cover options for storing and displaying digital pictures. Rather than being stored in shoeboxes or placed into photo albums, pictures can be organized into virtual albums on the computer. Photos from these albums can be e-mailed to friends or displayed on a computer monitor or on a television screen. Photoshop Elements will be one of the software programs used in the demonstration. Printed "how to" handouts will be available.

A free continental breakfast will precede the talk. Doors open for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the Memorial Lounge at Christ Church Cathedral (corner of Lake and Farwell in downtown Eau Claire). The program follows at 9 a.m. A drawing for "passport" prizes will be held immediately after the presentation at this last First Fridays event of the season.

First Fridays is funded by grant support from the Downtown Eau Claire Business Improvement District, the AnnMarie Foundation and Xcel Energy, as well as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Foundation Community Outreach Program for the Arts. The program is coordinated by Beverly Soll and Jennifer Hinners of the UW-Eau Claire Activities and Programs office and Scott and Heather Kirby of Christ Church Cathedral.

First Fridays events occur on the first Friday of each month October through May, with the exception of January, at no cost to the senior community. For more information about First Fridays or to be placed on a mailing list, call (715) 836-2787 [ARTS].
