UW-Eau Claire Women's Concert Chorale to Present Spring Concert May 1

RELEASED: April 19, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Women's Concert Chorale will present its spring concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The concert will feature highlights from the group's recent tour of the People's Republic of China — their first international tour — and their first compact disc release.

The ensemble will open with "Hosanna" by Knut Nystedt, followed by "Crucifixus" by Gabrieli, with conductor senior Sarah Norvold, Eau Claire, one of three student conductors for the performance. Also conducting will be senior Aurora Conde, Altoona, with "O lovely Peace, with plenty crown'd," from Händel's "Judas Maccabaeus," and senior Denise Swartz, Stanley, with John Rutter's "For the Beauty of the Earth." The choir also will present Stephen Hatfield's arrangements of "Las Amarillas" and "La Lluvia" and Donald Patriquin's arrangement of "J'entends le Moulin."

The second half of the concert will consist of music the ensemble performed on tour, including four pieces sung in Chinese. Randall Thompson's "Alleluia" and Moses Hogan's "Lily of the Valley" will be featured in the program, as well as Nathan Christensen's "How Do I Love Thee," a setting of the popular poem. The concert will feature many special highlights from the international tour, including memory tables set up for viewing in the lobby and Chinese flares to share with the audience the experience of the performers.

Women's Concert Chorale is under the direction of Alan Rieck, assistant professor of music.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
