EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The concert will begin with Fred Sturm's "Take It All," featuring senior Colin Gilliland, Fond du Lac, on trombone, and sophomore John Dehaven, Verona, on trumpet. Chuck Owen's "New Orleans Suite Part III: Red Beans and Ricely Yours" will feature freshman Matthew Rongstad, Eau Claire, on tenor saxophone; sophomore Adam Braatz, Sun Prairie, on organ; and junior Randall Pingrey, Madison, on trombone. "Night and Day" by Cole Porter will feature senior Ben Herpel-Dobay, Salem, Ore., on tenor saxophone; junior Evan Benidt, Minneapolis, Minn., on alto saxophone; freshman John Raymond, Golden Valley, Minn., on trumpet; senior Thomas Krochock, Minneapolis, Minn., on flugelhorn; junior Scott Currier, Brookfield, on piano; and Rongstad on tenor saxophone.
Other pieces in the program include "Outhouse" by Jerry Bergonzi and "Cover Up" by Thad Jones. Jazz Ensemble I will close with the premiere of the Grammy Award-winning "Buleria, Soea, Rumba" by Maria Schneider, with guest artist Peter Husse and assistant professor of music Dr. Jeffery Crowell assisting on cajon. The performance is dedicated to David Baker, professor of music, in recognition of his outstanding service as chair of the department of music and theatre arts and in honor of his retirement at the conclusion of this academic year.
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
