Media Memo: UW-Eau Claire Student Wins $100,000 Scholarship

TO: News/Assignment Editors

FROM: Judy Berthiaume, director, UW-Eau Claire News Bureau

DATE: April 18, 2005

SUBJECT: UW-Eau Claire Student Wins $100,000 Scholarship

A UW-Eau Claire freshman from Stoughton has won a $100,000 scholarship through a random drawing from an international business.

Cody Walker, who is enrolled in the pre-physician assistant program at UW-Eau Claire, received the scholarship from Barbizon International, one of the oldest and largest modeling and acting companies in the world. Walker entered a drawing for the scholarship after a motivational speaker sent by Barbizon made a presentation at his high school.

Walker had forgotten that he had even put his name in the drawing so he and his parents ignored multiple letters and messages from Barbizon officials notifying him that he had won the $100,000 award. The business finally contacted Walker's high school guidance counselor, who then called Walker to tell him that she thought it was a legitimate scholarship award.

The money can be used only for tuition.

The media can contact Cody Walker at (608) 628-6689 or walkercj@uwec.edu.
