UW-Eau Claire Alumnus Receives Prestigious Fellowship

RELEASED: April 18, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Jacob Gapko, a 2001 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, was recently awarded an Alpha Lambda Delta Fellowship in the amount of $3,000 for the 2005-06 academic year. Gapko is currently pursing a doctorate degree in library and information studies with a minor in science and technology studies at UW-Madison.

Twenty-three fellowships are awarded annually to Alpha Lambda Delta members for graduate study. Members apply for these fellowships during the senior year or after receiving their baccalaureate degree if they have maintained Alpha Lambda Delta initiation standards throughout their college careers.

"I was extremely surprised and grateful to receive word that I had received a fellowship," Gapko said. "I hope to work for a research one university or as a consultant for Big Science projects."

Over 160 fellowship applications were filed this year from the society's 251 chapters. Applications were judged by a committee of national council members. Since the Alpha Lambda Delta fellowship program began in 1940, students have been awarded in excess of $1,400,000 representing a large variety of educational disciplines.

Gapko graduated magna cum laude from UW-Eau Clare with a bachelor of science degree in physics and minors in mathematics and library science. In 2002 he earned a Master of library and information science degree from UW-Milwaukee.

Gapko was initiated into Alpha Lambda Delta at UW-Eau Claire in spring of 1997. He received the outstanding senior in physics award and the outstanding senior in the College of Arts and Sciences award in 2001. Additionally, Gapko won the American Library Association Carnegie-Whitney award in 2004 as well as the John R. Kock Estate scholarship for the 2004-05 academic year.
