UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble II to Perform Spring Concert April 21

RELEASED: April 14, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble II will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center under the direction of Robert Baca, professor of music.

The program will begin with "Lotus Blossom" by Kenny Dorham, as arranged by Marcus Printup, and will feature as soloists junior Josh Nims, Baraboo, on trumpet, and junior Steve Hobert, Hartland, on piano. Sophomore David Billingsley, Racine, also will perform a piano solo in Chuck Owen's "Glib." Louis Prima's "Sing, Sing, Sing" will close the first half of the concert with featured soloists sophomore Kyle Good, Waukesha, on drums, and senior Kevin Bailey, Milwaukee, on saxophone.

The program will close with eight pieces from "Far East Suite" by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Inspired by Ellington's tours of the Near and Middle East, India, and Japan in 1963 and 1964, "Far East Suite" is considered by some to be Ellington's masterwork. The influence of the different types of music Ellington was surrounded with is apparent in the parallel tones used in this collection.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $4 for the general public; $3 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and free for students with a university ID.
