Colleges Against Cancer Organize this Year's April 22 Relay for Life

RELEASED: April 14, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Members of Colleges Against Cancer are organizing this year's American Cancer Relay for Life event to be held April 22 on the McPhee Center Track of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire upper campus.

Senior management major Stacy Brager, Sauk City, started CAC last year, organizing 23 teams for the event and raising over $23,000. She said this year's goal is to raise over $30,000, and 400-600 students, faculty, staff and community members are expected to participate.

"Absolutely anyone can come to the event," said Brager. "All we ask is that you give a donation at the door if you aren't already a registered participant."

Relay for Life is an overnight event that unites the community in a common effort to raise much-needed funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Every year the funds raised help bring the American Cancer Society one step closer to eliminating the disease.

The event begins with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. to identify the American Cancer Society and the goals of Relay for Life. This ceremony includes a victory lap led by cancer survivors. Lighted luminaries decorated with names and photos of those who lost their battles with cancer and those who survived will light the way for walkers. The event will close with one last opportunity for cancer survivors and their caregivers to walk the track, extend appreciation to all relay participants, and celebrate the success of the event, which will include food music, games and prizes.

Sophomore nursing major Marcella Robinson, Friendship, said her team of nursing students called themselves The Lifesavers because their profession is dedicated to saving lives.

"Any contribution would help us reach our team goal of $1,500," Robinson said.

The event is free for all cancer survivors. A participation fee of $10 is required for those who are not cancer survivors or event volunteers. For more information, contact Brager, chair of the event, at bragersl@uwec.edu.
