UW-Eau Claire Forensics Team Meets Goals at AFA Tournament

RELEASED: April 13, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire forensics team placed tenth in the nation this past week at the American Forensics Association National Individual Event Tournament. The tournament was held on the Kansas State University campus.

Karen Morris, director of forensics, said the UW-Eau Claire team set two goals for the AFA-NIET tournament: to place in the top 10, a feat they hadn't accomplished in a while, and to maintain a 50 percent break rule, which means they hoped to advance 50 percent of their quarter-finals events to the semi-finals and 50 percent of their semi-finals events to the finals. The team accomplished their goals, sending eight events into the quarter-finals, four events into the semi-finals and three events to the final round.

Senior Kelly Bender, New London, placed second in persuasion and third in communication analysis in the final round. Bender also placed in the top 24 in the nation in informative speaking. Bender was selected to be a member of the AFA-NIET All-American Team. Individuals on this squad are nominated by their coaches, voted on by their district and then decided on by a national committee. These individuals are seniors who have demonstrated success at the AFA-NIET tournament and excellence in the classroom, as well as a commitment to the betterment of their community.

Senior Chris Conklin, Green Bay, placed sixth in after-dinner speaking in the final round. Conklin also placed in the top 12 in the nation in impromptu speaking.

Senior Rachel Mayasich, St. Cloud, Minn., placed in the top 24 in the nation in dramatic interpretation.

Junior Betsy Schroeder, Le Center, Minn., placed in the top 24 in the nation in informative speaking.

Sophomore Christine Zani, Hurley, placed in the top 24 in the nation in informative speaking.

Next up, the UW-Eau Claire forensics team travels to the National Forensics Association National Tournament in Akron, Ohio.
