UW-Eau Claire's chemistry department has been involving undergraduate students in faculty research projects for years. Since 1986, when the department started keeping track, more than 110 undergraduate students have co-authored papers in refereed journals. Students hope to raise $1,500 for a local food bank during "Soup and Bread Night" at 4:30-7:30 p.m. April 12 in Riverview Cafe (Hilltop Center) and The Terrace (Davies Center). Students hope to serve 1,000 people while raising awareness of hunger in the Chippewa Valley. Soups and breads will replace the evening menu. Volunteers will staff cafeterias. Savings in labor and food will be donated to Feed My People. A tradition since 1995, the event has raised more than $10,000 for Feed My People.

Several UW-Eau Claire Native American students will share their life experiences during a panel discussion titled "Our Stories, Our Lives." The Native American Awareness Month event will run from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. April 13 in Davies Theatre.

Three students received $1,000 awards from the honor society Phi Kappa Phi's study/intern abroad scholarship program. They will spend three weeks this summer in Scotland in a program for special education students. UW-Eau Claire received three of 38 awards given out nationally. Senior John Riederer was chosen for the Transatlantic Program, an international internship program in Germany. Offered by the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, it gives 25 U.S. students an overview of German business, the economy and politics, as well as culture and language. The program, which begins in May, includes language and cultural instruction, travel and meetings with government officials and private businesses, as well as a three-month internship with a business.
