UW-Eau Claire MBA Students to Tour Wisconsin Businesses

RELEASED: April 8, 2005

EAU CLAIRE — Students enrolled in a two-week summer MBA class at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will tour more than a dozen businesses in Wisconsin and Chicago.

Students enrolled in UW-Eau Claire's on-campus or online MBA program can register for the class, which will include tours of successful businesses of varying sizes, said Robert Erffmeyer, the director of UW-Eau Claire's MBA program. The 1.5 credit class also is available to students considering enrolling in the MBA program, he said.

"The experience is designed to give students an overview of how business is conducted in the United States," Erffmeyer said of the intensive two-week class. "Students will tour businesses, work on case studies and complete readings. They also will have time to go on side trips such as an architectural tour of Chicago or a visit to the Mall of America."

The "U.S.A. Summer Experience," which will run June 19-July 1, includes an optional business communication workshop for international students. The optional, two-week, non-credit workshop is designed to develop business communication skills, Erffmeyer said. The workshop, slated for June 6-June 17, will be conducted by business communication specialists on the UW-Eau Claire campus.

"I think this will be an outstanding opportunity for a new group of international students to get to know UW-Eau Claire, and to enjoy our campus and courses during the summer session," said Karl Markgraf, director of the Center for International Education. "A very positive component of this program is that students can get to know Wisconsin businesses on a first-hand basis through touring a range of local and regional businesses. This is an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with Wisconsin, and to establish some international connections to help the state expand its global networks."

Businesses included on the tour schedule are:

  • Eau Claire: Wal-Mart/Sam's Club; Luther Midelfort Hospital; Hutchinson Technology; and Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co.
  • Oshkosh: Mercury Marine; Kimberly-Clark; and Oshkosh Truck Corporation. Also, side trip to Experimental Aircraft Association.
  • Chicago: Chicago Board of Trade; and The Merchandise Mart.
  • Milwaukee: Harley-Davidson Motor Co.; and SABMiller.
  • Kenosha: SC Johnson Wax.
  • Madison: Trek.
  • La Crosse: Trane Company; and Ashley Furniture Industries
