For GeoGraphix Software![]()
MAILED: Dec. 19, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Harry Jol, associate professor of geography, and Dr. Colin Shaw, assistant professor of geology, were recently notified that the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has been awarded a 1-year grant worth almost $275,000 from the Landmark Graphics Corporation.
The grant for GeoGraphix software, maintenance and support includes an agreement that makes UW-Eau Claire the only licensed user of GeoGraphix in Wisconsin. The software is used in conjunction with the ground penetrating radar equipment that recently brought Jol and UW-Eau Claire international attention when he and a UW-Eau Claire student used it to help pinpoint the location for a major archaeological find in Israel.
Faculty and students in the department of geography and anthropology and the geology department will use the GeoGraphix software for both lab and field research. Shaw notes that the opportunity to use this state-of-the-art software give geology students at UW-Eau Claire an advantage when applying for graduate school and jobs.
Jol and Dr. Bradford Burton, a former assistant professor of geology at UW-Eau Claire, first successfully applied for the grant from the GeoGraphix University Grant Program three years ago. Jol and Shaw said they’re pleased that their students will continue to benefit from training and equipment that few universities can offer.
Jol also credits UW-Eau Claire’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the Dean’s office of the College of Arts and Sciences for contributing funds for the dual-screened computers needed to run the program.
