Alumni Couple Makes Gift
To UW-Eau Claire Fund-raising Campaign
MAILED: Dec. 6, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — Two University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire alumni who recall their quality education at the university have given a gift they hope will ensure other students the same experience.
Tom and Jeannie Flesch, Columbus, Ohio, recently made a $50,000 gift commitment to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to establish the university’s first endowed (permanently funded) Blugold Fellowship and to continue the couple’s longtime support of a Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarship.
Blugold Fellowships provide tuition support and stipends to outstanding first- and second-year students who collaborate with faculty members on their research and scholarly activities.
“UW-Eau Claire attracts outstanding students because of its emphasis on interactive learning through such activities as student and faculty collaborative research,” said Ronald Satz, provost and vice chancellor. “The Flesches’ generous gift to endow a Blugold Fellowship helps ensure the future of student and faculty collaborative research on this campus.”
The Flesches also have annually supported a Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarship at UW-Eau Claire since 1993. Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarships, funded partially by the state, go to the top graduating students in Wisconsin’s high schools who enroll at any UW System school, state technical college or participating independent college.
“We are grateful for the Flesches’ longtime support of Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarships, which are an effective way to keep Wisconsin’s best and brightest in the state, contributing to its healthy future,” Satz said.
Tom Flesch, a 1974 UW-Eau Claire business administration graduate, is president and CEO of Gordon Flesch Co. Inc., an office equipment service and supply company based in Madison. The firm, one of the top 100 privately held companies in Wisconsin, has branch offices in Milwaukee; Geneva and Joliet, Ill.; and Columbus and Mansfield, Ohio. Tom Flesch also is a member of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation board of directors. Jeannie Flesch graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1973 with a business education degree.
The Flesches, both Wisconsin natives (he is from Madison, she grew up in Wilton), met at UW-Eau Claire and have fond memories of their time on campus, said Jeannie Flesch.
“We both really believe that we got a wonderful education at UW-Eau Claire,” she said. “The quality of the professors was excellent, as is still evident by the high ratings the university receives each year.”
The Flesches’ gift is a contribution to UW-Eau Claire’s Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence campaign, part of the university’s effort to progress toward its long-term goals in spite of fiscal challenges resulting from the state budget crisis. The campaign seeks $35 million in private support by July 2005 for UW-Eau Claire’s people and programs.
“We are so happy to see the university make such an effort to run a successful campaign,” Tom Flesch said. “We hope to give other students the opportunity we had. This campaign will help to ensure that UW-Eau Claire’s high standards will continue to be upheld.”
