UW-Eau Claire Artists Series to Present
Special Performance by Michael Fuerst

MAILED: Oct. 24, 2002

EAU CLAIRE  Internationally acclaimed concert and recording artist Michael Fuerst will present a harpsichord recital at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Thursday, Nov. 7.
The Artists Series Special performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Born in Madison, Michael Fuerst studied organ and harpsichord at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at the Eastman School of Music, where he also held a teaching assistantship in the early music department. A two-year Fulbright grant took him to Freiburg, Germany, for intensive study. He taught harpsichord at the Dresden Academy for Early Music, is a regular instructor at Neuf-Brisach, France, and presents master classes on both sides of the Atlantic.
In addition to concert performances and CD recordings (Organum Classics, Deutsche Grammophon), Fuerst played regularly with Musica Antiqua Koln during the 1999-2000 season, and continues to work under the direction of its leader, Reinhard Goebel, as well as with the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle, Concerto Palatino, and other ensembles.
Now living in Hamburg, Germany, Fuerst is working on a dissertation and is in charge of the antique harpsichords and clavichords at the Organeum in Weener (Ostfriesland). He and baroque violinist Veronika Skuplik are planning a CD of German 17th-century violin music that Fuerst has found during a three-year project research sponsored by the University of Wurzburg.
The program includes music by Dieterich Buxtehude, Matthias Weckmann, Johann Jacob Froberger and J.S. Bach.
Admission is $5 for the public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff; and $1.50 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center in Davies Center, and will be sold at the door.
Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
Fuerst will also present a lecture/demonstration on clavichord technique Friday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. in Phillips Recital Hall. The event is open to the public and is free of charge.
Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
