UW-Eau Claire's Homecoming 2002
To Be Celebrated Oct. 7-12
MAILED: Oct. 3, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — Homecoming Week, one of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s largest annual events, will be held Oct. 7-12 — highlighted by numerous activities, a parade and football game.
With the theme “Pluck the Falcons,” Homecoming is expected to draw thousands of alumni back to Eau Claire to join students, faculty, staff and the public in the celebration.
During the week students will select Homecoming royalty and participate in various activities, including window painting, sand sculpture building and competing in games. Clues to the annual medallion hunt began to appear in the student newspaper, The Spectator, on Sept. 30.
The student talent show “Varsity Night Live!” will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in Zorn Arena. Bobby Tessel, one of few comics to appear on both “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Late Show with David Letterman,” will host the show.
Tessel attended Arizona State University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education. He then proceeded to utilize that education by pursuing a career in stand-up comedy. His first time on stage was to a packed house at the Funnybone Comedy Club in Cincinnati, and he destroyed the room. Since that night, he hasn’t looked back.
“I love stand-up,” Tessel says. “I love putting words in a sequence that no one in the entire world has ever thought of, in order to get a desired response, laughter. I think that’s cool.”
The “Varsity Night Live!” lineup includes Jazz Ensemble I; the hip hop group We One; a martial and healing arts demonstration by the student organization Hwa Rang Do/Tae Soo Do; the Singing Statesmen; vocal/guitar duo Joel Bowlsby and Bobby Mulrennan; a cappella group Fifth Element; and rock-blues group The Tony Florez Band. The coronation of Homecoming royalty will take place during intermission.
Tickets are available at the University Service Center, in the west lobby of Davies Center, and will be sold at the door. Admission is $7 for the general public, $5 with a UW-Eau Claire student ID card, or $2.50 for those wearing a 2002 Homecoming button.
Homecoming dance parties will begin at 10 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at Higherground, in Crest Wellness Center. Prizes and free snacks will be provided. A valid university or college ID is required. Admission is $1, or free to anyone wearing a 2002 Homecoming button.
The Homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at First Avenue and Water Street, and proceed west to Ninth Avenue. The UW-Eau Claire Blugold Marching Band, conducted by assistant professor of music and theatre arts Randy Dickerson, will lead the parade that includes floats and non-musical marching units. High school bands will perform and compete along the parade route. Dr. Mickey Crothers, assistant professor of psychology and recipient of the 2002 UW-Eau Claire Excellence in Teaching Award, will be grand marshal.
After the parade, shuttle buses will take football game fans to Carson Park beginning at 11 a.m. from the corner of Second Avenue and Water Street, Fifth Avenue and Water Street, and Towers Hall. Shuttles will run continuously until 30 minutes after the game. Parking is allowed in Carson Park by entering from Lake Street.
No carry-ins or tailgating is permitted in Carson Park.
The traditional pre-game Homecoming festival will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with music, food and beverage tents in the pavilions at Carson Park. The Mickey Larson Band, a blues-rock Eau Claire favorite, will perform, and the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association will sponsor an alumni tent. Festival admission is free; proof of age is required to purchase beer at the festival.
The UW-Eau Claire Blugolds will play the UW-River Falls Falcons at the Homecoming football game Saturday at 1 p.m. in Carson Park. Advance ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets are on sale at the University Service Center and can be purchased at the gate. Tickets are $5 for the general public, $4 for UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and those 62 and older, $3 for those 17 and younger, and $2 with a UW-Eau Claire student ID card.
Homecoming buttons are on sale for $1, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 11, in the east lobby of Davies Center. Also sold at Homecoming events, Homecoming buttons are required for participation in all activities. Buttons are worth reduced admission to the “Varsity Night Live!” show and free admission to the dance parties at Higherground.
UW-Eau Claire Homecoming activities are sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate and the Alumni Association. Numerous campus organizations sponsor and host individual events.
