EAU CLAIRE —The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire’s Wind Symphony and Symphony Band will perform in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13 in the Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The Symphony Band, directed by Rodney B. Hudson, associate professor of music, will open the concert with David Stanhope’s “Olympic Fireworks.” The remainder of the Symphony Band’s program will include popular works such as “Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa, edited by Frederick Fennell, and “Russian Sailors’ Dance” by Rheinhold Gliere, transcribed by Eric Leidzen.
The Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. R. Mark Heidel, assistant professor of music and theatre arts, will open with “Overture to Candide” by Leonard Bernstein, transcribed by Clare Grundman. The Wind Symphony’s concert will also include Percy Aldridge Grainger’s “Colonial Song” and “The Glory of the Yankee Navy” by John Philip Sousa, edited by Frederick Fennell.
“The musical highlight of the afternoon,” said Heidel, “will be the performance of all eight of Sir Malcolm Arnold’s ‘English Dances,’ with the first set of four dances performed by the Symphony Band and the second set by the Wind Symphony.”
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or 1-800-949-UWEC, are $4.75 for the general public; $3.75 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger, and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.25 for students with a university ID.
