UW-Eau Claire Amnesty International Chapter To Sponser Program Oct. 7
MAILED: Sept. 27, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Chapter of Amnesty International and the Chippewa Valley Chapter of Amnesty International will co-sponsor a program Oct. 7 titled “Civil Liberties in a New America.”
The program will include the film “Of Rights and Wrongs: The Threat to America’s Freedoms,” produced by First Monday, a program of the National Alliance for Justice. A discussion will follow the film, which features actress Susan Sarandon and the music of Bruce Springsteen. Also featured in the film are historians and civil liberties experts including historian, playwright and author Howard Zinn; George Mason University history professor and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Roger Wilkins; and Georgetown University law professor David Cole.
The film screenings and discussions are slated for 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Oct. 7 in The Cabin of Davies Center at UW-Eau Claire. An evening session is set for 7 p.m. in the Arrowhead Room of Davies Center.
The program is free and open to the public.
Founded in 1994, First Monday began as an annual event coinciding with the opening of the Supreme Court’s session on the first Monday of October. Each year, the national focus is on a different public policy issue. This year’s program seeks to raise awareness about the importance of civil liberties and ways to ensure that they continue.
