EAU CLAIRE — Singer-songwriter Matt Wahl will present a free outdoor concert at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Monday, June 17.
The Summer Session Programs show will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain: Schofield Auditorium). Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.
Matt Wahl spent three years in an office cubicle before giving up the corporate life for the open road. Living his dream of touring and playing music full time, Wahl has created a down-to-earth, light-hearted acoustic rock-folk sound that appeals to any age. Drawing from such artists as Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin and Jimmy Buffet, he mixes lyrically meaningful original songs with fun cover tunes.
Also on campus during the week of June 17 are these free events:
Concerts by UW-Eau Claire and area jazz musicians will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday on the Central Campus Mall (rain: The Cabin of Davies Center). A variety of grilled lunch items will be sold.
"The Four Feathers" (U.K. 1939) will screen Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre, continuing the Summer Cinema series about people making moral choices in an immoral world. Often filmed but never better, this epic tale of courage and redemption stars John Clements as an introspective British soldier who resigns his commission just before his regiment leaves for Lord Kitchener's 1898 campaign in the Sudan. After he receives four white feathers - accusations of cowardice - from his three closest friends and his fiancee, he sets out to redeem himself in the eyes of those he loves.
Director Zoltan Korda shot on location in exquisite Technicolor (earning an Oscar nomination for cinematography), and did it near enough in time to the historical events that many extras were veterans of the original battle of Omdurman. Ralph Richardson, June Duprez and C. Aubrey Smith costar in one of the grandest Empire films of all time - one brave enough to question the very traditions it celebrates. The 113-minute color film will screen via video projection.Summer Session Programs continue through Aug. 1. A complete schedule is available from Activities and Programs, Davies Center 133, (715) 836-4833.
