To Kick Off Summer Session Programs![]()
MAILED: May 24, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — An outdoor concert by Howard "Guitar" Luedtke and Blue Max will highlight the first week in an eight-week series of free Summer Session Programs at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Monday, June 10.
Led by one of the Midwest's best slide guitar players, the rocking electric blues trio will perform at 7 p.m. Monday on the Central Campus Mall (rain: Schofield Auditorium). Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.
Since its formation in 1982, Blue Max has opened shows for such big-name blues artists as Long John Baldrey, Lonnie Brooks, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Li'l Ed and the Blues Imperials, Tinsley Ellis, Jeff Healey, Jimmy Johnson, Kenny Neal, A.C. Reed, Eddy Shaw, Herbert Sumlin, Koko Taylor, Joe Louis Walker and Johnny Winter. Blue Max has three recordings on the False Dog label — "Molded by the Blues" (1992), "Live in Gleisdorf, Austria" (1995), and "Face to Face with the Blues" (1996).
Also on campus during the week of June 10 are these free Summer Session Programs:
"A Man for All Seasons" (U.K. 1966) will screen Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre, opening a weekly Summer Cinema series about people making moral choices in an immoral world. Paul Scofield stars as Sir Thomas More (1478-1535), the deeply principled Catholic scholar and statesman who was pressured to support the Act of Supremacy granting Henry VIII's marriage to Anne Boleyn — and Britain's divorce from the Church of Rome. The film received six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Actor (Scofield), Director (Fred Zinnemann), Screenplay (Robert Bolt, who adapted his play), Cinematography and Costume Design. Wendy Hiller, Leo McKern, Robert Shaw and John Hurt costar in "a picture that inspires admiration, courage and thought" (The New York Times). Rated G, the 120-minute color film will screen via DVD projection.
Concerts by UW-Eau Claire and area jazz musicians will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Friday on the Central Campus Mall (rain: The Cabin of Davies Center). A variety of grilled lunch items will be sold.
Summer Session Programs continue through Aug. 1. A complete schedule is available from Activities and Programs, Davies Center 133, (715) 836-4833.
