To Be Smoke Free in 2003![]()
MAILED: May 15, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — All residence halls at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will be smoke free beginning with the 2003-04 academic year.
Chancellor Donald Mash approved the smoke free policy after reviewing favorable recommendations from the United Hall Council, housing and residence life administrators, and other UW-Eau Claire administrators.
The United Hall Council passed a resolution in fall 2001 proposing that residence halls be smoke free. That resolution was forwarded to Charles Major, director of housing and residence life. He then approved it and forwarded it to other university administrators, who passed it on with their approval to the Chancellor.
Fewer students have been requesting smoking rooms in the halls, a resident satisfaction survey shows that more than 72 percent of the respondents want smoke free residence halls, the number of complaints about smoking in the halls has increased, and hall councils have been vocal in their support for a smoke-free policy, Jodi Thesing-Ritter, assistant director of housing and residence life, said of the reasons for the policy.
