Editor of The Progressive
To Be in Eau Claire March 19
MAILED: March 12, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — Matthew Rothschild, editor of The Progressive magazine, based in Madison, will be in Eau Claire on Tuesday, March 19.
Rothschild will give a speech on Bush's war on terrorism titled "A War Without Limits." The event, co-sponsored by a number of UW-Eau Claire student organizations, departments and community-based groups, will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Oneida Room of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Davies Center and will be open to the public.
"Bush's war knows no bounds," Rothschild says. "It is limitless in time, place, and choice of weaponry. And by the end, it will not have eliminated terrorism, but it may have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people."
Rothschild will also be speaking to students at Memorial High School from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to discuss "The New McCarthyism," which was the title of a cover story that he wrote for the January issue of The Progressive. Later in the day, he also will be a guest lecturer in the department of communication and journalism at UW-Eau Claire.
The Progressive, founded in 1909 by Senator Robert La Follette, is a monthly magazine of investigative reporting and political commentary.
"The student chapter of Amnesty International is delighted to have Matthew Rothschild coming to UW-Eau Claire. We believe he's bringing a much-needed perspective to our community," said Rita Webb, adviser to the group. The Amnesty chapter is one of the co-sponsors of Rothschild's visit, along with the Campus Greens, The Conservationists, the Center for International Education, and the community-based organizations Northern Thunder and Just Peace.
For more information on the events, contact Webb at (715) 836-3259. Rothschild can be reached at (608) 257-4626.
