UW-Eau Claire's National Youth
Sports Program Wins Award
MAILED: March 5, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — The National Youth Sports Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire recently earned a Meritorious Award, which recognizes the top NYSPs in the country.
UW-Eau Claire has won the award, given by the National Youth Sports Corporation president, nine times since 1993.
Once again this year, UW-Eau Claire also was one of five schools nominated for the Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence, which is presented to the top NYSP program in the nation. UW-Eau Claire won this award in 1991 and 1998.
"The award says a lot about the quality of the staff we have and the fact that the university sees the program as providing a valuable service to the community," said Bill Harms, project administrator for NYSP and UW-Eau Claire's associate vice chancellor for student services.
The first NYSP program was created in 1969 as a free summer camp aimed at economically deprived families. Today, there are 192 programs across the United States.
Boys and girls, ages 10 to 16, who meet specific economic criteria, are eligible to participate for free. NYSP camps are funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the USDA summer food program covers food costs.
The NYSP staff at UW-Eau Claire is made up of college students, community members and members of the athletic department.
In its 22nd year this summer, UW-Eau Claire's NYSP will again offer math/science and senior programs in addition to the sports instruction.
The camp, sponsored by the NCAA and University Recreation, will run from Thursday, June 13, through Friday, July 19. There will be no camp July 4 and 5.
