Activities Set for Feb. 14-17![]()

EAU CLAIRE — The schedule of activities for Winter Carnival 2002 is set for Feb. 14-17 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Highlights include a reggae concert by Dred I Dread, a comedy showcase featuring Michael jr. and ComedySportz, and a midnight screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." The celebration also sets campus groups and individuals in competition with each other in a variety of tournaments. Events are free unless noted.
Thursday: The festival begins at 2 p.m. with a two-hour dog sledding demonstration behind Governors Hall on upper campus. Free rides will be given. More information is available from the Outdoor Recreation Center, (715) 836-3616.
A van will leave Thursday at 3 p.m. for an evening of downhill skiing at the Coffee Mill Ski Area, Wabasha, Minn. Due at registration, the $10 fee includes ski rental and transportation but does not include the cost of a lift ticket. The trip is limited to 10 participants; contact the Outdoor Recreation Center to reserve a spot.
Tournament competition begins Thursday with eight ball billiards from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Bowling and Billiards Center of Hilltop Center.
Thursday through Sunday, Spike Lee's "Bamboozled" (2000) will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre. Tickets are $1 for UW-Eau Claire students or $2 for UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and International Film Society members at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727. International Film Society memberships are available for $4.
Friday: Winter camping, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and the company of friends is part of a winter weekend getaway to the Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. All necessary equipment is included in the trip price of $30, due at registration. The trip is limited to 10 participants; departure time will be set based on class schedule. More information is available at the Outdoor Recreation Center.
Flood Plane will perform Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. in The Cabin of Davies Center. Refreshments will be sold.
The improvisational antics of ComedySportz and the hip comedic style of Michael jr. will be showcased Friday at 9 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door.
A Mardi Gras masquerade party at Higherground in Crest Wellness Center will begin at 10 p.m. Friday. The $1 cover charge will be waived for those wearing a mask.
A Winter Carnival tradition continues with Friday's screening of the popular cult film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at midnight in the Council Fire Room. Roger Ebert has called the 1975 film "not so much a movie as more of a long-running social phenomenon." Admission is $2 for UW-Eau Claire students, UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and International Film Society members. Tickets are available at the Service Center in advance and will be sold at the door just before show time.
Saturday: Tournaments continue Saturday with snow softball from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Towers Recreational Field, and snow volleyball from 1 to 4 p.m. on Putnam Hall's volleyball courts.
Doors will open at 8 p.m. Saturday for a concert featuring the Minneapolis reggae band Dred I Dread in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. International Connections will appear as special guest. Tickets are $7 ($5 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door. The show is open to all ages; proof of age is required in the bar area.
Sunday: Winter Carnival activities conclude with moonlight bowling from 3 to 6:30 p.m. in the Bowling and Billiards Center of Hilltop Center.
