MAILED: Nov. 13, 2001
EAU CLAIRE — One person was killed and a second was injured in a construction accident on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's upper campus early this afternoon.
Two Market & Johnson Inc. employees were on scaffolding removing a section of the university's Power Plant wall when a portion of the brick wall collapsed on them. One man was killed and the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the accident.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.
When the accident occurred at about 1 p.m., the construction workers were removing a section of the building's wall to make room to install a new boiler, which is part of a Wisconsin Division of Facilities Development project.
Bartingale Mechanical Inc. of Menomonie is the prime contractor on the $1 million project, and Market and Johnson of Eau Claire was a subcontractor doing the general construction work.
University Power Plant employees were the first on the accident scene, assisting the victims until Eau Claire fire and rescue personnel arrived on campus.
Representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Eau Claire County medical examiner's office, the state DFD, UW-Eau Claire's Public Safety office and the Eau Claire police department were at the scene this afternoon.
UW-Eau Claire's Counseling Services staff offered support services to those people who may have witnessed the accident.
