EAU CLAIRE — Smash Mouth will
appear in concert on Thursday, Dec. 6, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau
Claire. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. An opening act will be
announced at a later date.
Concert tickets go on public sale Monday, Oct. 22. A
special advance sale for UW-Eau Claire students only will take place
Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 18-20. Tickets will be sold only at the University
Service Center windows, and purchasers must present a valid UW-Eau Claire
student ID card.
Smash Mouth’s current single, a remake of The Monkees’
smash hit “I’m a Believer,” has spent more than 11 weeks on Billboard’s
Hot 100 Singles list. The group’s new album will be in stores Nov. 13.
A novelty rock band in the same vein as Presidents of the
United States of America, but with surf and garage influences instead of a
punk-thrash background, Smash Mouth found a hit in 1997 with the
‘50s-influenced “Walkin’ on the Sun.”
The San Jose quartet formed in 1994, recording two demos
that were put into rotation on a local radio station. After playing a summer
festival with No Doubt and Beck, Smash Mouth recorded “Fush Yu Mang” (1997)
and was signed by Interscope. Its first single, “Walkin’ on the Sun,”
became a number-one modern rock hit and pushed the album into the Top 40. The
follow-up album, “Astro Lounge” (1999), generated the hit “All Star”; a
collection of early material, “East Bay Sessions,” also appeared that year.
Smash Mouth’s March 1998 concert at UW-Eau Claire, when
they shared the stage with Third Eye Blind, was sold out.
Reserved seating tickets are $21 (including service fee
and tax) at the University Service Center in Davies Center. Service Center hours
are 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Beginning Oct. 22, tickets may be charged to MasterCard
or Visa when ordered by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate
Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added
to all telephone charge orders.
The concert is sponsored by Event Resources Presents,
Inc., and the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student
Senate.
