EAU CLAIRE — USA Rugby selected
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire senior Timoly Sommer, Colby, as one of
28 athletes on its 2001 Women’s Rugby All-American First Team for outstanding
play during the 2000-01 academic year.
“It’s exciting,” Sommer said of the honor. “I
didn’t even know anything about it until someone at work (Scheels All Sports)
told me.”
Sommer, a senior advertising major, has played on the Eau
Claire club rugby team since her first semester in the fall of 1998, when two
girls living on her floor asked her to come out for the team. Since then she has
helped lead the team to a Midwest Final Four appearance in 1999 and a successful
6-1 campaign in 2000.
“It’s something different,” Sommer said of rugby.
“It’s so complex…it really is a mental sport.”
Players selected to the first team, which was announced
Aug. 8, represent 19 teams from the seven USA Rugby territorial unions. In
addition to the first team, 35 athletes were chosen for the second team and
three received honorable mentions. Nominations were submitted by coaches and
administrators and processed by an ad hoc group.
Sommer received a letter and certificate from USA Rugby,
which formed in 1975 and is the national governing body for rugby. The
Collegiate Women’s All-American Program began in 1995.
