EAU CLAIRE — The Wisconsin Academic
Advising Association has honored University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire adviser
Jeannie Harms with its first Advising Excellence Award.
“It is deeply rewarding to be appreciated for service
to students,” said Harms, who received the award Sept. 21 at the 2001 WACADA
Conference at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. “I am cognizant of
the truth that I did not receive this award in a vacuum. I feel a tremendous
sense of gratitude to all of my colleagues at UW-Eau Claire, both past and
present, for sharing their wisdom and expertise.”
A native of Pasadena, Calif., Harms received her
bachelor’s degree from Trinity University in San Antonio and master’s degree
from UW-Eau Claire. She began her career at UW-Eau Claire in 1980 as a residence
hall director and became an academic advisor with Academic and Career Services
in 1987.
Any adviser in an institution of higher education in
Wisconsin is eligible to receive the Advising Excellence Award, which recognizes
those who demonstrate outstanding dedication to advising based on criteria
consistent with the National Academic Advising Association. These include
strength of interpersonal skills, frequency of contact with advisees, evidence
of student success rate, advisee evaluations, mastery of institutional
regulations, policies and procedures and perception by colleagues of advising
skills.
