EAU CLAIRE — The University of
Wisconsin-Eau Claire forensics team started the 2001-02 academic year with a
sixth place finish in overall team sweepstakes at the Boilermaker Speech/Debate
Tournament held Saturday, Sept. 22, at Purdue University in West Lafayette,
Indiana.
Eight UW-Eau Claire students, including both novices and
veteran speakers, participated in 24 events.
Senior Eric Rasmussen, Eau Claire, took first
place in informative speaking, senior Brian Haapala, Grayslake, Ill.,
placed third, and freshman Brandon Buchanan, San Antonio, Texas, placed
sixth. Haapala also placed third in prose interpretation.
Senior Aaron Unseth, Plato, Minn., took first
place in poetry interpretation and fifth place in persuasion.
Freshman Abe Barnes, Wisconsin Rapids, took first
place in novice impromptu speaking and third place in novice extemporaneous
speaking.
Senior Scott Boras, Kellogg, Minn., placed fifth
in rhetorical criticism.
The forensics team will compete again in the Mid American
Forensics League Swing Tournament to be held at Ripon College on Saturday, Oct.
6 and UW-Whitewater on Sunday, Oct. 7.
