EAU CLAIRE — The University of
Wisconsin-Eau Claire will begin work Monday, Sept. 24, to replace a steam
condensate return line serving Hibbard Humanities Hall. The university expects
to complete the project by Nov. 1.
Leaks in the condensate return line were discovered last
winter, said Andrew Soll, vice chancellor for business and student services. At
that time, an emergency repair request was made to the State Building
Commission, which allocated $128,000 in state funds for the project in late
February. Bids were opened in mid-June, and a signed contract and Notice to
Proceed were received in early September.
The project will involve trenching on the north side of
Garfield Avenue — from near the footbridge to Hibbard Hall — to expose the
buried pipe duct to allow replacement of deteriorated piping, Soll said. The
repair must be done before winter to assure uninterrupted operation of building
heating equipment in Hibbard and to avoid possible environmental concerns
associated with the discharge of water from the leak into the Chippewa River, he
said.
UW-Eau Claire has worked with the contractor to minimize
the impact of the project on the daily operation of the campus. Soil excavated
from the trench will be stored off-site to avoid large piles of dirt in front of
the Ecumenical Religious Center, Soll said, adding that no trees will be removed
as part of the project. The contractors will assure access to the ERC parking
lot and building, and no work will be done at times when it might interfere with
ERC activities. The project includes restoration of the ERC driveway and
sidewalk.
Students, faculty, staff and visitors are encouraged to
use the sidewalk on the south side of Garfield Avenue for their safety and
convenience.
