Hmong Religion and Cultural Values
Workshop Offered Sept. 26
MAILED: Sept. 6, 2001

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension will sponsor a workshop focusing on Hmong religion and cultural values.
The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Best Western Hudson House Inn, Hudson, Wis.
The goal of the program is to raise awareness and interest in learning about traditional Hmong culture, beliefs, values and practices. The workshop will be of special interest to social workers, counselors, clergy, librarians, nurses, attorneys, police officers, teachers and individuals who work with the Hmong.
Topics to be discussed throughout the day include Hmong history, the Hmong New Year celebration, courtship and marriage, child rearing and discipline, Hmong leadership, herbalism and egg coining, Shamanism, and Hmong burial. A question and answer period also is included in the agenda.
Houa Vue Moua and Pang Cher Vue will present the program. Moua, co-author of the book Trail Through the Mists, is a bilingual/bicultural interpreter who has given presentations on the Hmong to cross-cultural groups. In 1998 the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Women’s Studies Consortium of the University of Wisconsin System recognized Moua as “an exemplar of commitment to educational excellence through diversity,” emphasizing her “contributions to the University of Wisconsin System, and in particular, Women of Color.” The Girl Scouts of America honored Moua with the Women of Distinction Award. In 1990 President George Bush presented the Thousand Points of Light Award to Moua and her husband in recognition of their extraordinary community service work.
Vue is the director of Hmong education programs for UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension. He designs and implements programs on Hmong culture. Vue also presents workshops and seminars and has taught courses on Hmong topics.
The workshop fee is $149, which covers instruction, materials, refreshments and lunch.
Participants may receive 0.6 continuing education units (six clock hours) for full participation in this workshop.
The registration deadline is Sept. 19. Contact the UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education office, (715) 836-3636, for more information or to determine program eligibility after the deadline date. Registrations at the door will be accepted on a space-available basis.
