The music of legendary jazz greats Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Irving Mills and Thad Jones is coming to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Jazz Ensemble III, directed by associate professor of music and theatre arts Robert Baca, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The concert will begin with "Shaw 'Nuff" by Gillespie and Charlie Parker, followed by Horace Silver's
"Song for My Father." Other selections will include "It Don't Mean A Thing" by Ellington and Mills,
"Big Dipper" by Jones and "Come On Get Happy" arranged by Adi Yashaya.
Various jazz and voice students will be featured soloists throughout the concert.
"The members of Jazz III are some of the most talented and enthusiastic younger musicians we have had to date. They are our future and are very interesting to watch and listen to," said Baca.
"It's like watching college football versus pro. There is a sense of passion, commitment and
'musicianship on the line' that comes from this ensemble."
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, are $3.75 for adults; $2.75 for those age 62 and older, children 17 and younger, and faculty or staff with a university ID; or free for students with a university ID. -30- SL/NW
