UW-Eau Claire Dance Team
Placed Fourth in Competition
MAILED: Feb. 6, 2001

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Dance Team placed fourth in the Open Division at the 2001 National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 12 and 13.
“Our goal was to make it to finals and we went beyond our goal,” said team co-captain Kelly Krumrie, a junior from Inver Grove Heights, Minn.
To enter the competition, the team, made up of 14 women, submitted a video audition tape in November. After making the first round, the dance team was asked to enter the preliminary competition in Orlando, where the group competed against 21 college teams in their division. The team then was chosen as one of nine teams to compete in the finals.
As a part of the University Recreation sport clubs program, UW-Eau Claire’s dance team was the only team in the division that did not have a professional choreographer or coach, said team co-captain Julia Godfrey, a junior from Wauwatosa.
“We really had a team effort in choreographing,” Godfrey said, adding that the team practiced three to four hours a day prior to the competition.
“The most challenging part was our first performance,” Godfrey said. “We really had to work at being mentally prepared, knowing that we have what it takes to compete at such a high level.”
Krumrie and Godfrey agreed the best reward they received from the competition was standing on the same stage as the best dance teams in the nation. The Universal Dance Association, sponsor of the competition, awarded the team a trophy.
“I want to congratulate the team on all their hard work and dedication,” said Vicki Reed, associate director of University Recreation and dance team adviser. “They are an outstanding group of young women who represent UW-Eau Claire with enthusiasm and professionalism.”
The dance team performs at all UW-Eau Claire home basketball games, “Varsity Night Live!” and at the Homecoming football game halftime. To raise money for the team’s operation, the members also hold an annual clinic and competition every November.
