EAU CLAIRE
Campus and community organizations and programs will offer service opportunities to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students, faculty/staff and the public during Community Action Day, set for Thursday, Feb. 1, at UW-Eau Claire.
People who wish to offer their time and efforts to area service organizations on a voluntary basis will have a chance to explore such opportunities at the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.
A number of the represented agencies provide opportunities that enable students to receive university credit or to fulfill the universitys service-learning requirement through the Community Action and Lifelong Learning Program and the Service-Learning Office.
The emphasis of Community Action Day is on serving the greater Eau Claire community, said Paula Stuettgen, student development coordinator and coordinator of the CALL program. Through service, the volunteer learns more about the community and helps fill an identifiable need, Stuettgen said. The university places an emphasis on service to ones community as a method of practicing the theories and methods learned in the classroom.
CALL also publishes an annual directory and a bi-monthly newsletter which list service opportunities and job descriptions, to help put individuals and organizations in touch with community agencies in need of volunteers.
