In the past seven years the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claires jazz program has put out seven CDs. This year is no different, except for one thing.
The previous seven CDs have highlighted only Jazz Ensemble I. This eighth CD will showcase all five of the universitys jazz ensembles: Jazz Ensembles I, II, III and IV, as well as Jazz Pedagogy.
In the past 12 years, the quality and depth of all the ensembles has grown tremendously, said Robert Baca, associate professor of music and theatre arts and director of four of the five ensembles.
Baca, along with Ron Keezer, associate professor of music and theatre arts and director of the other ensemble, came up with the idea for this CD. We felt that all the ensembles were equally outstanding, said Baca, explaining that all five jazz ensembles brought in near-capacity crowds for their fall concerts and received standing ovations. We wanted to produce a CD that displayed all of their talents.
Because of his job, Baca said he is very in tune with which colleges are making CDs, and he knows of no other college in the country that has produced a CD such as this.
Theres a risk factor in opening up a program from top to bottom, he said. But we feel we have the depth to show the quality down through all the ensembles.
The CD was recorded in May and features students who were in the ensembles during the 1999-2000 academic year.
The CD, titled Jazz in Clearwater: Things to Come, will be released in late January. It will be available at the University Bookstore, Borders Books & Music in Eau Claire, and the Tower Records and jazz ensembles Web pages. The previous seven CDs are available at Borders stores everywhere and have been distributed in 27 other countries. Baca expects the same will happen with the eighth.
