EAU CLAIRE
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claires Jazz Ensemble III will perform its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Robert Baca, associate professor of music and theatre arts and conductor of the ensemble, said a few selections on the program were chosen as a dedication to the 100th anniversary of Louis Armstrongs birth.
The selections to be performed in Armstrongs honor are Woody n You by Dizzy Gillespie, Tribute to Louie by Rich Matteson and Portrait of Louis Armstrong by David Berger.
The concert also will include Quintessence by Quincy Jones, Speed Ball by Sonny Rollins and Rockin In Rhythm by Duke Ellington.
I chose the selections I did to exhibit the great talents of individuals and the ensemble playing of the band, said Baca, noting there will be numerous student soloists.
The ensemble will end the program in a way it never has before: It will perform Oleo by Sonny Rollins, with the arrangement for this work composed at the concert.
The concert will close with the ensemble performing a big band piece that will be taught by my performing the individual parts to them and students playing the parts back, Baca said. Call and response is the essence of what jazz is; therefore, the concert will close with this essence.
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, are $4.75 for adults; $3.75 for those age 62 and older, children 17 and younger, and faculty or staff with a university ID; or $1.25 for students with a university ID. -30- LK/BW
