EAU CLAIRE
The fire and brilliance of Latin American roots music will take center stage at a performance by Laura Fuentes y Calicanto Thursday, Sept. 28, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Songs from Chile, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela will be performed at the concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.
Singer-guitarist Laura Fuentes founded Calicanto in 1996, taking the band's name from a famed bridge in her native Santiago, Chile. Each concert features the core duo of Fuentes and guitarist-percussionist Josué Pizarro, joined by outstanding Latin artists from Chile, Puerto Rico, Spain or Mexico.
Fuentes received her music degree in vocal performance from UW-Madison. As the lead singer with Sotavento, Paraguas and Madisalsa, she performed internationally and recorded four CDs. Her debut solo recording, "Sobrevida," captures the magic and complexities of Andean and Caribbean music on guitar. Her just-released CD is titled "Delicadeza."
Tickets, available at the University Service Center in Davies Center and at the door, are $5, or $3 for UW-Eau Claire students.
Tickets may be charged to MasterCard or Visa when ordered by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
The concert is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate. -30- JS/BW
