Blugold Fight Song Lyrics Updated
MAILED: July 14, 2000

EAU CLAIRE — Everything seems to change with time, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugold fight song is no exception.
The traditional lyrics recently have undergone modifications designed to make the song more representative of today's student population, according to Marilyn Skrivseth, director of athletics.
The changes to the song came about in response to suggestions made by parents and student athletes, Skrivseth said. "The song was outdated and no longer fit our current sport module for men or the addition of women's sports."
John Lee, a classroom services specialist in the Media Development Center at UW-Eau Claire, was involved in developing the new words for the song. As an alumnus of the Singing Statesmen, Lee said he was very familiar with the old lyrics to the song and believes that they are an important part of the school's history. "While tradition is an important part of this university, the addition of many new athletic sports over the years has required an update to the lyrics," he said.
Lee has been present at a number of women's athletic events over the past 10 years in his capacity as a sound technician and says it became clear to him at these events that the song needed to be changed. "It was very evident that the fight song, especially when played at the women's athletic events, was not in tune with the times," he said.
"It was not our aim to totally abandon the old song, which has served this school for so many years," Lee added. The main goal was to change the song's gender references and its specific ties to football.
Words such as "boys" and "fellows" have been replaced in the new version of the song by references to "Blugolds." Also, the phrases "get the ball" and "march right down that line" have been replaced to make the song applicable to all sports at the university. The new lyrics include phrases such as "aim for excellence" and "give the best that you have in you." Lee said these words were chosen, because they highlight the consistent drive for excellence by all the athletes in all sports at UW-Eau Claire.
Skrivseth says the new song lyrics should serve the university better than the old lyrics. "To help cultivate school loyalty, it is nice to have words that are more inclusive of our student body," she said.
