University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire senior Lana Wirtala, Thorp, recently was awarded the $1,500 Richard D. Lorentz Memorial Scholarship. Seniors in the College of Business Entrepreneur Program are eligible for the scholarship. Wirtala is among about 30 students enrolled in the program at UW-Eau Claire.
Award of the scholarship is based on an essay written by the applicant, which includes the student's reasons for wanting to be part of the Entrepreneur Program, and an interview.
Richard D. Lorentz, professor emeritus of management and marketing, was a key player in setting up the College of Business Entrepreneur Program. When he died in April 1999 at the age of 61, a scholarship was established in his honor.
Wirtala, who plans to graduate in May 2001 wants to purchase the flower shop where she currently works.
A graduate of Thorp High School, Wirtala is the daughter of Mike and Linda Wirtala. -30- JM/LWG
