EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Artists Series will present an evening of early vocal music by The Rose Ensemble Thursday, April 27.
The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Eau Claire.
Artists in Residence at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis since 1997, The Rose Ensemble is known for its historically informed performances of ancient music in striking acoustical settings.
Early Music America praised The Rose Ensemble's "seemingly effortless, blended sound," calling the 10-member group "persuasive, passionate and a pleasure to hear."
Lauded for its innovative programming and fresh approach to early music performance, The Rose Ensemble has been featured numerous times on Minnesota Public Radio and recently was hailed as outstanding artists by Arts Midwest and by the Minnesota State Arts Board. The Rose Ensemble is a 2000 Minnesota Music Awards nominee for Best Classical Ensemble and has received a Jerome Foundation grant for its composer-in-residence program.
"The Fenix" — a work by this season's composer in residence, Edie Hill (b. 1962) — is included on the Artists Series program. Works by Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652), William Byrd (1543-1623), Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599), Gilles Binchois (c. 1400-1460) and Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) also will be performed, along with medieval liturgical music and chants from the Gregorian Votive Mass for the Holy Angels.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel called The Rose Ensemble "a world-class group with a distinctive take on its repertoire."
General admission seating is $15 for the general public, $13 for those age 62 and older and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff, or $5 for those age 17 and younger and UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center in Davies Center and will be sold at the door.
Patrons also may charge tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
The Artists Series is made possible by student funds allocated by the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
