MAILED: April 3, 2000
EAU CLAIRE
Signs have been installed identifying designated smoking entrances for each of the academic buildings at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The signs are in response to the University Senate request that one outside entrance or area for each academic building be designated for smoking, said Kathy Mitchell, associate vice chancellor for business and student services. Mitchell worked with individual building coordinators to determine the most appropriate entrance area to designate for smoking.
"We'll ask people to look for the prominently displayed smoking and no smoking signs that will be found at each entrance," Mitchell said, noting that for now ashtray-like containers will remain at all entrances so people not familiar with the new policy will have a place to extinguish their cigarettes.
Buildings affected by the policy are Hibbard, Brewer/Campus School, Schneider, Schofield, Phillips, McIntyre Library, Nursing, Haas Fine Arts, Human Sciences and Services, and McPhee.
The University Centers and Programs Advisory Committee and the United Hall Council recommended that no one entrance is designated for smoking at other campus buildings or residence halls. -30- JB
