More than 210 students from 17 western Wisconsin high schools participated in the 18th annual regional Mathematics Meet held Feb. 12 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Eau Claire Memorial team, the Discrete Fleet, took first place in the large school AAA division with 128 points. The La Crosse Logan team, Radical Rangers, won the second-place trophy with 122 points.
The Discrete Fleet team featured Nick DeMeuse, Nora Khatib, Ben Maro, Mario O'Brien, Matt Pantzlaff and Kelly Tan.
With 27 points, Eau Claire Memorial's Pantzlaff took first place in Class AAA. He was offered a $500 UW-Eau Claire scholarship funded by a grant from Northern States Power to the sponsor, the UW-Eau Claire mathematics department.
Second-place Class AAA honors went to Peter Tyser, La Crosse Logan, with 25 points. Ali Elgindi, Eau Claire Memorial, took third place with 20 points. Eau Claire North's Nick Karpenske earned fourth place. Tyser was offered a $300 UW-Eau Claire scholarship, Elgindi was offered a $200 scholarship, and Karpenske was offered a $100 scholarship.
The medium school AA division was led by the Durand team, the Evens, with 108 points. The La Crosse Aquinas team, Axes, placed second with 106 points.
The Durand team consisted of Tiffany Black, Maggie Heike, Karl Gunderson, Anthony Milliren, Kelly Thorson and Ben Weisenbeck.
Elizabeth Pearce, La Crosse Aquinas, placed first in Class AA individual honors with 23 points. Gunderson, Durand, placed second with 20 points. Scoring 18 points and tying for second place were Weisenbeck, Durand; Li Huan Peng, La Crosse Aquinas; and Nicky Holm, Osseo-Fairchild.
Pearce was offered a $500 UW-Eau Claire scholarship and Gunderson was offered a $300 scholarship. Holm, Peng and Weisenbeck each were offered a $200 UW-Eau Claire scholarship.
In the small school A division, the Mackmaticians I from McDonell Central High, Chippewa Falls, placed first with 88 points. The Cashton Conics placed second with 85 points.
McDonell's team consisted of Phil Cigan, Lindsey Feuling, Nick Hansen, Sara Pokrzywinski, Bobby Swoboda and Garrett Volk.
Autumn Zietlow, Cashton, scored 22 points for first-place Class A individual honors. She was offered a $500 UW-Eau Claire scholarship.
Molly Cousin, Augusta, and Hansen, McDonell, tied for second place with 18 points. Mike Kuhn, Cashton, took fourth place with 17 points. Cousin and Hansen each were offered a $300 UW-Eau Claire scholarship. Kuhn was offered a $100 scholarship.
Other Class AAA individual winners were Nick Schmock, Eau Claire North; Nora Khatib, Eau Claire Memorial; and Tim Rusterholz, La Crosse Logan.
Other Class AA individual winners were Dan Lively, La Crosse Aquinas; Leroy Webster, Stanley-Boyd; and Tiffany Black, Durand.
Other Class A individual winners were Bobby Swoboda and Renata Pakostova, both of McDonell.
The winning Eau Claire Memorial team was advised by Mark Slepica. Dean Brunner advised the first-place Durand team, and Tony Reiter advised McDonell, the first-place finisher in Class A.
Other advisers were Jeff Axness, La Crosse Logan; Chuck Schmidt, La Crosse Aquinas; and Gary Dickinson, Cashton.
