Eleven University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire bachelor of fine arts degree candidates will show their work in one of two exhibits Feb. 24-March 3.
A reception for the Design Portfolio Exhibition will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center, while the reception for Senior Exhibition I will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, in the same location.
The Design Portfolio Exhibition displays items from seniors' graphic design portfolios, such as design campaigns for local businesses, posters, brochures and some magazine and packaging designs. The exhibiting seniors are Rebecca Scallon, Madison; Wendy Elrod, Black River Falls; Jeff Szpak, Merillan; Tim Vonderloh, Omro; Jason Konz, Appleton; Jason Grube, Wisconsin Rapids; and Travis Welke, Chippewa Falls.
"My graphic design could be described as a functional modern type of art," Elrod said. "Its purpose is to communicate a message in a clear yet interesting way."
Senior Exhibition I will showcase paintings, photography, drawings, illustrations and ceramics. Works will be displayed by seniors Kayleen Lium, Eau Claire; Matt Bowen, Lancaster; Erik Natti, Elroy; and Kevin Zappa, Comstock.
"My art is often an art of the moment," Natti said. "I put my feelings down on paper directly and then try to work with the feeling or theme that emerges. My purpose in creating art is to arrive at something meaningful, something that strikes a chord of recognition in others and myself."
Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays and 1-4:30 p.m. weekends. For more information, call director of Foster Gallery Tom Wagener, (715) 836-2328. -30- LK/BW
