EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students will explore internship opportunities and acquire employment tips at Internship Mania 2000 Wednesday, Feb. 9. The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Council Fire Room, Davies Center.
More than 65 employers from the Chippewa Valley, other Wisconsin cities, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois will staff booths highlighting their companies and internship opportunities in all areas, including chemistry, social work, communications and business.
The event also includes resume and cover letter critiques, an employment attire show and mock interviews. Students interested in participating in mock interviews should pre-register at the booth in the East Lobby of Davies Center between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Jan. 26-28.
Derek Solheim, career counselor, stressed that Internship Mania is open to students of all majors and class standings, as well as to individuals who have not yet decided on a career path.
"Even though students may not know what they want to do, they should come and talk with the employers. Use Internship Mania as a time to learn about internships and career options," Solheim said.
Internship and field experience coordinator Bill Jacobson emphasized the importance of networking at the event.
"Internship Mania is an outstanding place to network," Jacobson said. "Students need to come and 'work' the crowd."
Jacobson encouraged students to ask questions of the employer representatives, delve deeply into companies and learn who the contacts are who might be helpful. "Just because a company says there's only one type of internship now, that doesn't mean there won't be future opportunities in different areas of the company," he said. "Remember, companies and agencies are open to suggestions, and you might be able to create an internship that would be just right for you."
Solheim invited students to visit the Career Services office before the event for help with resumes and for tips on interviewing and networking.
Limited space is available for employers who still wish to purchase booth space. The $30 registration fee includes a 6-foot table, parking and a lunch buffet for two recruiters. If more than two recruiters attend, there will be a $10 fee per person. For more information, contact Solheim, (715) 836-5358.
The event, which is in its second year, is coordinated by several student organizations and Career Services.
