Dr. Larry G. Schnack, chancellor emeritus of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, recently was awarded the 1999 Liberal Arts and Sciences Citation of Merit. The award was presented by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Iowa State University, Schnack's alma mater.
"This is the highest honor given by ISU to honor an alumna or alumnus who's nationally or internationally recognized for preeminent contributions to agriculture, arts, education, industry, professions, public service, social welfare, science or other endeavors," said Jaye Stefani of ISU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Every year as many as three alumni receive this award, but this year Schnack was the only recipient.
"I was very pleased to be recognized by my alma mater in that way," Schnack said.
A visionary leader in higher education, Schnack retired after 32 years at UW-Eau Claire, where he served as chancellor, as distinguished professor and in other administrative roles. He is admired for his farsighted leadership and his generous commitment to the community.
Under his guidance as chancellor, the university steadily focused on providing the best of undergraduate education, up-to-date technology and a strong commitment to diversity.
"He is an inspiration to others to improve the higher education community effort in America," wrote a colleague.
Another said, "Larry Schnack is a great leader in his profession, a good community citizen and a person who truly loves life." -30- LK/BW
