EAU CLAIRE — A 1971 alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has made a $10,000 gift to support the university's women's basketball program.
Tim Coburn, Eau Claire, is a longtime supporter of UW-Eau Claire, particularly of the women's basketball program and the Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarship program.
"We're delighted to recognize Tim's generosity and certainly appreciate his avid involvement with the university and Alumni Association," said Dr. Jack Fistler, president of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. "He's a true Blugold."
The UW-Eau Claire Foundation's Women's Basketball Fund is used to benefit the students who participate in the sport, as well as faculty in the university's women's athletics program.
"I decided the day I walked out of Zorn Arena with my diploma that it was time to start giving time and money to the university," Coburn said of his history of giving to UW-Eau Claire. "I looked at it as something that I owed the university because of the education it provided me."
Coburn said he has been a lifelong sports fan and a longtime fan of UW-Eau Claire's women's basketball program, particularly its head coach Lisa Stone.
"I admire the way Lisa (Stone) teaches," Coburn said. "She teaches valuable lessons that can be used off the court as well as on. I know her players use those lessons long after they've graduated."
Several years ago, Coburn also decided to support two WAES awards. Presented to the best students from each Wisconsin high school, the WAES awards provide a $2,250 scholarship toward tuition and fees, which is renewable for three additional years.
"I've always been very interested in UW-Eau Claire athletics but the university's primary focus is on education," Coburn said of his decision to support the academic side of the university. "I didn't want to be one dimensional in my support since without the academics, there wouldn't be any sports teams."
Coburn, an auditor for the State of Wisconsin, currently serves as president of the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association Board of Directors.
