Annual Journalism Conference
To Be Held at UW-Eau Claire
MAILED: Sept. 15, 1999|
The 50th Annual Fall Journalism Conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus.
The event is held to provide middle, junior and senior high school journalists with an opportunity to improve their journalistic skills, network with yearbook and newspaper staff from around the state and participate in yearbook and newspaper competitions.
The yearbook and newspaper competitions will be held on the spot, and only one student staff person per school may enter. Yearbook contestants will use information provided and photocopies of pictures to create a two-page spread. They will be judged on photo selection and cropping, copy, headline and caption writing, and the overall layout and design.
Newspaper contestants will be introduced to an interview subject and hear a statement about him. The contestants will have the opportunity to interview the subject during a mock press conference. They then will write a feature story on the person.
Besides the competitions, various sessions will be held throughout the day where conference participants will learn about different topics related to journalism.
The event is open to the public but geared toward public and private school journalism staff persons, as well as home-schooled students interested in journalism.
UW-Eau Claire College of Arts and Sciences Continuing Education/UW-Extension and the Chippewa Valley School Press Association will sponsor the event.
Schools can pre-register until Sept. 16 or pay at the door. Registration will take place at Zorn Arena the day of the conference.
To attend the conference, the fee is $8 for students and advisers if their school is a C.V.S.P.A member. The C.V.S.P.A membership fee is $50. Only students from member schools may attend. Advisers from non-member schools may attend but will be charged a $20 fee. Home-schooled students need to call La Vone Sneen at (715) 836-5179 for fee information.
