EAU CLAIRE
The Garfield Avenue hill on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus will be closed to motor vehicle traffic on weekdays, beginning Sept. 2.
The hill through campus, which has been used this summer by many motorists because of the city's State Street construction project, will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning Thursday, Sept. 2, the first day of fall semester classes at UW-Eau Claire.
Kathleen Mitchell, associate vice chancellor for business and student services, said more than 3,000 students walk up and down the hill on days when classes are in session.
"It's been our practice for many years to close the hill on weekdays during the fall and spring semesters for the safety of students," she said.
The campus bus service between upper and lower campus, which has been using the campus hill this summer, will be re-routed down Water Street to Menomonie Street to Clairemont Avenue. The route's 30-minute weekday schedule and hourly weekend schedule will remain the same. -30- JW
