Jori Lyn White, Wisconsin Dells, will deliver the "Response from the Class" during the Aug. 7 commencement at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
White is a candidate for a bachelor's degree in elementary education.
A late-night walk through campus convinced White to participate in the commencement speech competition. During that stroll, memories started flowing and she decided to write a commencement speech that would capture her thoughts about her five-year stint at UW-Eau Claire.
"I wasn't going to write a speech unless I could put into words something meaningful about my time here," said White. "I was just walking through campus late one night and I started thinking about all the memories I have of college. It was overwhelming to think college was coming to an end.
"Another reason I wanted to do this was to prove to myself that I could write something that other people thought was good, and to see if I could get up in front of a large group of people. Graduating from college is important to me, so I'm flattered that I get to give this speech."
Starting in the fall, White will teach kindergarten at Lakeshore School in Eau Claire -30- LK/JB
